A hike only for experienced mountain hikers

For experienced mountain hikers who are still looking for a little challenge, the hike through the Radltal valley between Hallstatt and Gosau is just the thing. Suitable equipment and sufficient water supplies are a prerequisite, because between the Echerntal and the Hintere Gosausee there is no possibility to refill one's water bottle. All hikers who are travelling with their four-legged friends should also take this to heart.

Let's go: Start in Hallstatt's Echerntal valley
Mountain hikers with a certain amount of stamina can venture out and walk one of the most beautiful long-distance hiking trails, namely the Radltal trail from Hallstatt to Hintere Gosausee. You should set off early in the morning (around 6:00! )and take enough provisions and drinks with you, as there are no supply facilities until you reach the “Hintere See-Alm” (1161 m). We walk through the Hallsttatt Echerntal valley on the Dachstein bridle path no. 601 to the source of the Waldbach (913 m).
Das hochgelegene Langtal (1763 m) verschafft uns

To the Gosau lakes

From here we branch off to the right to the “Radltalweg” (No. 613). After half an hour we arrive at the “Landner-Alm”. Always slightly ascending, the narrow path leads us into a narrow alley. In front of us on the right is the “Schwarzkogel” (1856 m). In this area there is a cave grotto and the "Zaglauer Loch", a deep sinkhole. Via the dilapidated “Radltal-Alm” we reach the “Bärwurzanger”. On the left is the “Bärwurzkogel” (2006 m). The high “Langtal” (1763 m) gives us an insight into a rare nature reserve. We may encounter chamois, capercaillie and even Lagopus. From the “Kogelgasse” we then descend steeply to the “Hintere Gosausee” (hindmost Gosau Lake) and the serviced “See-Alm” (1161 m). After a six-hour hike through the unique mountain landscape of the UNESCO World Heritage region of Hallstatt Dachstein Salzkammergut, we have earned a stop for refreshments.

Grandiose hiking finale

We soon reach the “Gosau-Lacke” along the western shore of the lake and past mountain pastures. A beautiful road leads out to the “Vordere Gosausee” (foremost Gosau lake) (933 m). From here we again have a magnificent view of the Dachstein, and all along the way we can look at the “Gosaukamm”, a climbing paradise like in the Dolomites. After another 2 hours we have finally arrived at the bus stop "Gosausee". Please inform yourself in good time about bus timetables or the possibility of taking the "hiking taxi". If you find time on another day, you should take the Gosau Dachstein cable car up to the Zwieselalm. From there you have a panoramic view all the way to the “Großglockner”. In winter, Gosau is a skiing El Dorado with countless lifts and the best cross-country trails.

Please also plan the return journey by bus for this tour. The bus stop is located directly at “Vordere Gosausee”. Links to the bus timetable and the bus stop are summarised below under "Information at a glance".
