Hike from the Krippenstein to Simonyhütte

First of all…

The following hike is a high alpine hiking tour. Mountain experience, stamina, sure-footedness and good preparation are the best prerequisites for a successful and safe day trip. Please do not attempt it wearing sports shoes, normal street shoes or flip-flops! This ensures nothing will get in the way of an adventurous hike. Still have questions? From the Gjaidalm to the Simonyhütte

In this variation of the hike to the Simonyhütte, the trail takes us over the Krippenstein. There are numerous places to stop for refreshments along the way, such as the picturesquely located Schilcherhaus on the Gjaidalm or the Wiesberghaus. The ascent by cable car eliminates the sweaty part. We can therefore concentrate fully on the fauna and flora. However, surefootedness, mountain experience and endurance are also a prerequisite on this tour!

Ascent with Climbing Aid

The route starts with the Krippenstein cable car up onto the Dachstein hiking world on the 2000 metre high Dachstein plateau. All relevant operating times can be found below for your planning under "Information at a Glance". We comfortably ride all three sections of the cable car to the Krippeneck station. From here we hike on a driveway down to the Schilcherhaus on the Gjaidalm. From there we follow a well-signposted path westwards towards Simonyhütte and Wiesberghaus. After about three quarters of an hour, the path divides. We follow the signpost through the Zirmgrube and into the Taubenkar further to the Simonyhütte.

The Journey is the Reward

From there, climb up steep, pine-covered rock steps in the direction of Ochsenwieshöhe. Turn left on the Franz-Josefs-Reitsteig, on a broad hiking trail, into the barren Wildkar and finally in hairpin bends through the rocky flank of the Taubenriedel - past the "Hotel Simony" (cave bivouac) - to the Simonyhütte. The trail from the Gjaidalm to the Simonyhütte takes about three hours. Surefootedness, hiking boots and a head for heights are a prerequisite for this variant.

To Hallstatt or Obertraun?

There are several options for the way back: Either the descent via the Wiesberghaus and the Tiergartenhütte to Hallstatt's Echerntal valley. The tour leads to the Hallstatt bus terminal in just under 6 hours. Or return the same way. Please note the last cable car ride of the 3rd section of the Dachstein Krippenstein cable car from the Gjaidalm. Times & prices can be found below under "Information at a Glance".

The choice is yours!

Whatever you decide, we hope you enjoy one of the most beautiful mountain tours in the Salzkammergut: the hike to the Simonyhütte. And maybe we'll see you at the foot of the Dachstein?
