Bike tour with children: how to make it a success for young and old

Spring marks the beginning of the season for cycling trips with children. Whether you're of kindergarten or primary school age, these tips will make the tour fun for the whole family.

  • Check tires, brakes, lights and screws on the children's bike
  • Adapt the length and difficulty of the route to the child's age
  • Provide variety on the go
  • Family picnicking in a meadow during a bike ride

The decisive factor in the selection of the route is the age of the children and their safety on the bike. Even four-year-olds can be quite fast; however, they should also be able to stay in lane and brake. Trails with little to no road traffic are best. The length of the route that a preschool child can be expected to cover cannot be decided across the board, but only individually. For example, one child may have had enough after just one kilometre, another only after four kilometres. Either way, don't overwhelm your offspring.

Children up to the age of ten who cycle regularly can sometimes cover up to 30 kilometres a day, older ones even longer distances. But regardless of whether you are a kindergarten or primary school child: Don't go to the limit, otherwise the first bike ride together may also be the last, because your child will go on strike next time.

It is best to start with primary school children with distances of a maximum of ten to 15 kilometres and then expand them a bit from bike tour to bike tour. For kindergarten and primary school children, it is strongly recommended to think of an alternative transport option (see below) in case they get tired. This is also advisable if the age of the participating children is far apart and the youngest often needs a break.
