Hiking in the nature reserve "Koppenwinkel" Obertraun

Hiking enthusiasts and lovers can enjoy a fantastically beautiful nature to the fullest in Obertraun at the foot of the Dachstein (mountain name). Whether you want to explore loftier heights or wander through the lush green Obertraun, one thing is certain: there is plenty of space and mountains to let off steam here in the UNESCO World Heritage region of Hallstatt Dachstein Salzkammergut. And for those who prefer to take it easy, we recommend the "Koppenwinkel" nature reserve with its romantic "Koppenwinkelsee" (small lake). It is a beautiful hike along the Traun, especially on hot summer days. This place conveys life and happiness. The bubbling springs, the clear streams, the quiet lake, the alpine pasture, the young cattle and the thoughtful people are like a scene from historical stories. Framed by the rocks of the Lahnfried, the "Koppenwinkel" is the ideal place to experience moments of happiness.

Career opportunities. We decided to enter here at the Traun car park at the Koppenrast inn. From here, the hiking trail leads in 15 minutes to the "Koppenwinklalm" (alpine huts), past the "Children's Village" and the Koppenwinkllacke (Koppenwinkelsee). This enclosed alpine basin with the Lacke and the ruggedly sloping walls of the Koppen offers a unique and imposing sight and is one of the most romantic and quiet places in the village. A hiking trail branches off from the Koppenwinklalm in a westerly direction, which leads to the Federal Sports School in about 60 minutes - past the "Hagen- und Bühlerbach" (a small forest stream) and the so-called "Ebnersteg" (schlamer stony path). Over the Ebnersteg (to our right) we change the Traunufer (river bank). We keep to the right and walk along a wide forest path along the Traun. We leisurely cross forests, meadows and fields. Now we come across another Traun bridge (name of a river bridge), cross and turn left in the direction of "Koppenwinkelsee". In just under half an hour we are back at the starting point of our hike through the "Koppenwinkel" in Obertraun.

Additional Experience Tip

Just on the other side of the main road (L547) begins the so-called "Koppental". A narrow gorge with a hiking trail and cycle path. In this valley lies one of the most interesting caves in the region: the "Koppenbrüllerhöhle" (Cave). From the street and from the parking lot, it can be reached on foot in about 30 to 40 minutes. The guided tours in this cave are almost always from the beginning of May to mid-September. So if you still feel like a little cave adventure, you should take a look at them.
