BergeSeen Trail Stage 36

The first section of the ‘Kasberg’ alpine variation begins at the Almtalerhaus Hut. The route crosses the Ring Saddle, leads to a hunting lodge in the Brunnental Valley and finally travels through the Katzengraben to arrive at the Steyer Hut, which provides overnight accommodation.

From the Almtalerhaus Hut to the Brunnental Hunting Lodge (3 hours)

The route initially follows the trail markers ‘Herrentisch, Ringsattel, Steyrling’, continuing along a wide, flat forest path heading north. After 500 metres, the trail arrives at a junction. To the left, a path leads in the direction of the Ödsee Lakes (10 minutes to the small lake, 20 minutes to the large lake). Our trail continues straight ahead for a short distance and then begins the steep ascent to the beautiful views at the Herrentisch and Ring Saddle (897 m). The path then makes a moderately steep descent to the Ring Hut (hunting lodge). At this point, the route heads along the forest road which leads out of the narrow Steyrling River Valley. After 2.5 kilometres, the trail reaches the old forester’s lodge in the ‘Bernerau’ region and shortly thereafter arrives at a junction after a bridge over the Steyrling. The route continues straight ahead and after an additional 4 kilometres reaches the small settlement at the Brunnental Hunting Lodge.

From the Brunnental Valley to the Steyrer Hut (2 ½ hours)

From the Brunnental Hunting Lodge, the route follows signposts along a forest path towards the north-west, heading into the valley through the Katzengraben. After 2 kilometres, the route arrives at bridge. Immediately afterwards at a right curve, the trail makes a left onto a former logging road. The route ascends alongside the stream until reaching a forest road with markers. Our trail continues for a short time along the road, keeping left at the fork. Shortly thereafter, a hiking path turns off to the right. The route ascends through the forest along this trail for approximately 45 minutes to finally arrive at the beautifully situated Steyrer Hut.

Many prominent figures have explored this region: nobles like Archduke Johann and Empress Elisabeth, scientists such as Friedrich Simony, poets and authors like Nikolaus Lenau, painters like Ferdinand Georg Waldmüller, musicians and composers such as Johannes Brahms. Did they ever think that hiking in the Salzkammergut might have no end? That they could tramp from one lake to the next and then onward to yet another? Day by day along the shores of crystal-clear waters? Week-long excursions through quiet valley forests, over sunny alpine meadows and up mountains fuelled by the anticipation of the next destination? Tips: Hiking in spring

The days in the Salzkammergut are getting longer. The temperatures are finally getting warmer, more and more hikers are heading to the mountains. But be careful: Especially in spring, there are a few things to consider: There is often still a lot of snow on the mountains, so be careful when crossing snowfields. After winter, you are usually still a bit "rusty", so warm up accordingly in advance and plan your tour carefully. Let your host know the planned route. This can lead to quick help in an emergency. But there's more to consider:
