BergeSeen Trail Stage 9

From Strobl to Nussensee

From the departure point of the tourism office in Strobl (directly next to the church), the trail follows the lakeshore promenade to the north to the outlet of Lake Wolfgang. Just before the bridge with its small dam, the trail turns to the right down a short staircase and then continues along a beautiful hiking path on the right bank of the Ischler Ache (small river). The trail goes under the main road and arrives after 1.5 kilometres at the Schlagermühle farmstead.

The trail continues once again to the right for one kilometre along a wide hiking path and then reaches the Schwarzense-Landstraße. The route goes left over the bridge and then immediately right along a narrow path. It continues on the left bank of the river to a dam and then leads onward to cross a road arriving at the bridge in Voglhub.

The trail crosses this bridge and continues along the right riverbank to another dam. It then heads right along a narrow road to the Gasthof ‘Zur Wacht’ tavern. The trail continues over a bridge (border between Upper Austria and Salzburg) and follows the street another 700 metres until reaching the Nussenbach Stream. The route follows a forest path uphill along the stream and finally arrives at Lake Nussensee.

From Nussensee to Bad Ischl

There are two possibilities at this point of the trail: a lovely path leads to the right around Lake Nussensee to a broad hiking path, or hikers can stay to the left of the lake (shorter) to arrive at this same path which then leads up to a hill. The trail then continues downwards through the forest to the paved Lindaustraße. The route goes left for a short distance and then descends to the right along the Auerbachweg. Shortly before reaching the Wolfgangsee Highway, the trail turns right at a chapel into the Elisabeth-Waldweg path.

The trail follows this flat hiking path, which was constructed in memory of Empress Elisabeth, to the lovely Kalvarienberg Church with its herb garden. The route continues down the many steps of the Kalvarienbergweg path to arrive in the centre of Bad Ischl. The tourism office (Kurdirektion) is located directly south of the parish church.

Many prominent figures have explored this region: nobles like Archduke Johann and Empress Elisabeth, scientists such as Friedrich Simony, poets and authors like Nikolaus Lenau, painters like Ferdinand Georg Waldmüller, musicians and composers such as Johannes Brahms. Did they ever think that hiking in the Salzkammergut might have no end? That they could tramp from one lake to the next and then onward to yet another? Day by day along the shores of crystal-clear waters? Week-long excursions through quiet valley forests, over sunny alpine meadows and up mountains fuelled by the anticipation of the next destination? Tips: Hiking in spring

The days in the Salzkammergut are getting longer. The temperatures are finally getting warmer, more and more hikers are heading to the mountains. But be careful: Especially in spring, there are a few things to consider: There is often still a lot of snow on the mountains, so be careful when crossing snowfields. After winter, you are usually still a bit "rusty", so warm up accordingly in advance and plan your tour carefully. Let your host know the planned route. This can lead to quick help in an emergency. But there's more to consider:
