BergeSeen Trail Stage 3

From Steinbach to Weißenbach

From the tourism office in Steinbach am Attersee (in the village centre), the trail heads directly across the street to the south and goes uphill to the left at the first junction. It continues along the Ernst Bitterlich Straße and then follows a short stretch of forest road until arriving at the beginning of the Nikoloweg trail.

With light ascents and descents, this narrow, well-maintained path leads through the shady Hochwald forest and offers occasional views of the beautiful Lake Attersee and its surrounding mountains. The path is also a highly interesting nature education trail which later (near Weißenbach) explores the topic of stream and avalanche control. Shortly before reaching the village of Weißenbach, the trail heads downhill to the right to Lake Attersee and immediately thereafter arrives in Weißenbach.

From Weißenbach to Lake Schwarzensee

From Weißenbach, the trail continues along the street next to the lakeshore past the Europacamp (swimming opportunity) and a sawmill. It then heads over a bridge and continues until reaching a bike and pedestrian path forking to the right. This path leads to the community of Burgau and subsequently to a car park, where the forest road ‘Moosstraße’ begins on the opposite side of the street.
The trail ascends along the forest road. At the fork, the trail keeps right and eventually arrives at the Moosstube, a hunting hut located at the beginning of the Moosalm alpine meadow.

Continuing a short distance along the forest road to the Mooskreuzung junction, the trail turns to the left. Traveling through the broad fields of the Moosalm meadow, the trail reaches the Gschwandtnerhütte (rest point) and then heads onward to Lake Schwarzensee. Following the lakeshore to the right, the trail arrives at two taverns (Almstadel and Gasthof ‘Zur Lore’).

Between the two taverns, the Sattelweg trail forks to the right, initially ascending to the ‘Sattel’ (807 m). The trail then begins its descent, passing the ‘Holzerbauer’ snack station with the houses of St. Wolfgang quickly coming into view. From here, it’s only a few minutes’ walk to the town centre with its famous pilgrimage church.

Many prominent figures have explored this region: nobles like Archduke Johann and Empress Elisabeth, scientists such as Friedrich Simony, poets and authors like Nikolaus Lenau, painters like Ferdinand Georg Waldmüller, musicians and composers such as Johannes Brahms. Did they ever think that hiking in the Salzkammergut might have no end? That they could tramp from one lake to the next and then onward to yet another? Day by day along the shores of crystal-clear waters? Week-long excursions through quiet valley forests, over sunny alpine meadows and up mountains fuelled by the anticipation of the next destination?
