BergeSeen Trail Stage 17

From Gößl to the ‘Vorderer’ Lake Lahngang

From the church in Gößl, the route heads along the street to the east and then left to the edge of the forest where a marked narrow trail begins. The trail ascends through the wooded landscape to a forest road. The route crosses the road and soon arrives at a broad path leading up from Schachen which is the normal ascent to the Pühringer Hütte. The trail continues along flat terrain to the meadows of the Schwaiber Alm where the path to the Gößler Alm forks to the left. Continuing straight ahead and after crossing two forest roads, the trail reaches the Kanzlermoos, a swampy meadow region. The route steeply ascends to a rocky narrow passage, the ‘Draußengatterl’. After an additional short climb, the trail crosses the steep sides of the Graswand cliffs and arrives at the Schafbüheln. From here, it’s an easy descent to reach the beautiful ‘Vorderer’ Lake Lahngang.

From the ‘Vorderer’ Lake Lahngang to Elmgrube

The trail follows the lakeshore to the left until reaching the end of the lake. After a light ascent, the trail arrives at the old huts of the Lahngangalm. Continuing uphill, hikers soon have an unobstructed view of the shimmering, green ‘Hinterer’ Lake Lahngang. From here, it is a short distance to the Elmgrube with its numerous huts and fine hunting lodge.

Attention: Following the trail marker straight ahead leads to the Pühringer Hütte alpine hut, which can be reached in approximately 45 minutes. However, our Salzkammergut Trail turns left here.

From the Elmgrube to the Albert Appelhaus

From the hunting lodge at the Elmgrube, the trail heads left to the north through a broad corrie and then ascends to a saddle called the Abblasbühel (approx. 1855 m). From here, the path to the Wildgößl turns to the left and a short distance later, the Grieskarsteig path turns to the right, leading down to Lake Almsee.

However, our path continues straight ahead along the relatively flat northern ridge of the Wildgößl. The trail goes along the small Lake Wiesensee and then continues in light ascents and descents to the north past several mountains: the Hinterer Bruderkogel, Widderkarkogel and the Redender Stein. Finally the route descends through a sparse forest to the beautiful location of the Albert Appelhaus, an alpine shelter house.

Many prominent figures have explored this region: nobles like Archduke Johann and Empress Elisabeth, scientists such as Friedrich Simony, poets and authors like Nikolaus Lenau, painters like Ferdinand Georg Waldmüller, musicians and composers such as Johannes Brahms. Did they ever think that hiking in the Salzkammergut might have no end? That they could tramp from one lake to the next and then onward to yet another? Day by day along the shores of crystal-clear waters? Week-long excursions through quiet valley forests, over sunny alpine meadows and up mountains fuelled by the anticipation of the next destination? Tips: Hiking in spring

The days in the Salzkammergut are getting longer. The temperatures are finally getting warmer, more and more hikers are heading to the mountains. But be careful: Especially in spring, there are a few things to consider: There is often still a lot of snow on the mountains, so be careful when crossing snowfields. After winter, you are usually still a bit "rusty", so warm up accordingly in advance and plan your tour carefully. Let your host know the planned route. This can lead to quick help in an emergency. But there's more to consider:
