From the Steyrer Hut to the Kasberg Mountain (1 hour)

The route begins from the Steyrer Hut along path No. 433, heading west in the hollow below the Kasberg Mountain. The trail then curves left to ascend the hills north of the Roßschopf Mountain (1647 m). It takes only minutes to complete the climb to this vista-rich summit. Our trail turns to the north and travelling along a ridge, reaches the summit cross of the Kasberg Mountain. From this point, hikers are rewarded with majestic views of the Great Priel Mountain, the mountains around Lake Almsee and the Dachstein Mountain.

From the Kasberg to Grünau im Almtal (2 ½ hours)

The descent along path No. 431 initially leads through moderately steep terrain covered with mountain pines. The trail then turns toward the west. A rocky, but not difficult, section is traversed with aid from cables. The trail finally arrives at the Sepp Huber Hut which sits in an alpine meadow at an elevation of 1506 metres.

The trail makes a short ascent to the Benn Nock Peak and then descends along a ridge to a ski slope, which it then follows for a short distance. A path to the hunting lodge in the Farrenau region turns off to the left. The Hochberghaus Lodge is reached by means of a forest road. At 1132 metres, the location of the hut provides gorgeous views. The trail (No. 431) bypasses a curve of the Hochberg Toll Road and then continues along the road for a short distance. The route then takes a left and steeply descends through the forest to an alpine meadow (750 m). The trail continues alongside a stream and soon thereafter reaches the first houses of Grünau. The route turns left and arrives at the village centre with its parish church. The tourism office of Grünau im Almtal is located in the town hall.

Many prominent figures have explored this region: nobles like Archduke Johann and Empress Elisabeth, scientists such as Friedrich Simony, poets and authors like Nikolaus Lenau, painters like Ferdinand Georg Waldmüller, musicians and composers such as Johannes Brahms. Did they ever think that hiking in the Salzkammergut might have no end? That they could tramp from one lake to the next and then onward to yet another? Day by day along the shores of crystal-clear waters? Week-long excursions through quiet valley forests, over sunny alpine meadows and up mountains fuelled by the anticipation of the next destination?
