More about the route
We start at the municipal office in Bad Goisern and turn right into the market square. We follow the Salzkammergut cycle path R2 in the direction of Hallstatt. After about 1.5km, the cycle path joins the Pass Gscjütt main road (B166) to the right in the direction of the towns of Hallstatt and Gosau and we stay on the cycle path on the B166 for another 1.8km to cross the B166 slightly to the left (km3.3) after the inn "Zur Post" (name of the restaurant) in Steeg, staying on the (R2) "Salzkammergut Radweg" in the direction of Hallstatt.
Now we follow the signs of the cycle path, after about 800m we cross under the tracks of the "Salzkammergut Bahn" (railway) (km4.1) and shortly afterwards (300m) turn right (km4.5) to the next underpass, staying right again on the "Radweg R2" (km4.8) and after about 800m we reach the lake (km5.6).
Now we follow the "Ostuferweg" (name of the cycle path) for 2.1km to a rest house called "Seeraunzn" (km7.7) and cross uphill under the railway line of the "Salzkammergut Bahn") and cross the junction (km7.9) about 200m above the lake. We continue on asphalt until we reach a fork in the road after about 800m and turn left (km8.7) into the forest road.
It goes slightly downhill for the time being and after about 1.1km we cross under the railway line again and are again directly at Lake Hallstatt (km9.8). We continue along the eastern shore path of the fjord-like lake over the suspension bridge, past the "Hallstatt" train station and until we finally reach the junction in Obertraun at the railway after about 3.2km.
Note: Especially along Lake Hallstatt there are numerous bathing opportunities - so pack your swimsuit!
We cross the route (km13.0) in a left-right combination and follow the path to the right along the railway line, past the "Obertraun" station for about 600m to the "Hallstätter Landesstraße" (name of the street) (road name L547) (km13.6). We cross the L547 and continue for 300m along the railway line, turn left and after 100m turn right into the L547 (km14).
Nach 200m auf der L547 (km14,2) verlassen wir diese nach rechts, folgen dem Weg 500m bis zur "Traunbrücke" (Name der Brücke) (14,7), queren diese und biegen unmittelbar danach links ab.
We cross a small stream (km14.8), stay straight ahead on this path (R2 turns left) which shortly afterwards goes up a little steeper until we continue steeply uphill after about 300m straight ahead into the forest road (km15.1).
After about 700m across the training area of the mountain bike center, we come back to asphalt directly at the valley station of the "Dachstein Krippenstein Seilbahn" (km15.5). We keep left at the edge of the car park and after about 200m turn into the forest road (km15.7), continue straight ahead and after about 600m in the right-hand bend (km16.3) on the left a beautiful view over Lake Hallstatt.
It goes 800m slightly downhill and at km17.5 we turn right into the R2 cycle path. After crossing two streams and passing the "Koppenwinkelalm" (name of the alpine pasture area) in a left-hand bend, we come to the Koppenwinkelsee (km18.3) after about 800m.
After another 700m we come from below into the L547 (km19.0), turn left in the direction of the inn "Koppenrast" (name of the restaurant), recharge our batteries here or cross the river called "Koppentraun" and after about 200m turn right upstream at the Koppentraun into the cycle path to Bad Aussee.
We stay on the cycle path for the next 8.2km until we cross the "Kainischtraun" (name of the river) passing the "Bad Aussee" train station and leave the cycle path (km27.4) and continue straight ahead on the Bahnhofstraße to cross the Vereinigte Traun and continue below the "Salzkammergu Bundesstraße" (name of the street) (road name: B145) in the direction of Bad Aussee. We always stay on the main path in the direction of the town centre and after about 1.2km at the post office (km28.6) we cross the Vereinigte Traun again.
After a short distance we turn right into the L702 and at the first opportunity turn left up in the direction of "Kammerhof Museum". After about 400m we turn left into Bäckergasse (km28.8) and continue on the main path, past the "Stieger Schnitzelwirt" (name of a restaurant) and after about 1km keep left (km29.8) and turn into the Ausseer Radweg after about 1km.
We follow the cycle path signs in the direction of "Blaa Alm" (name of an alpine hut) past the Altausseersee (name of the lake), cross the village of "Altaussee" and after about 6.4km on asphalt through the "Ski Resort Loser" and straight ahead through the gate (km36.2) on gravel in the direction of "Blaa Alm" which we reach after about 1.6km. On the "Blaa Alm" (name of the alpine pasture area) (km37.8) there is the possibility to recharge the battery.
We cross the barrier after the alpine pasture, turn right at the next junction (km38.1) after about 300m and after another 100m turn left (km38.2).
Now comes the ride on the "Soleweg" for about 3.7km through the "Rettenbachklamm" (name of the gorge), which is certainly one of the most beautiful nature routes through the Salzkammergut. The gorge is the shortest connection between Bad Aussee and Bad Ischl.
Attention: there is a short tunnel on the way, which of course is a small handicap when unlit, but also has an adventure character.
After a left turn, already outside the gorge, the Rettenbachalm opens up (km41.9), after about 500m on the right side of the path is the primeval "Lippenbauernhütte" (name of the mountain hut) (km42.4), which is lovingly run by a mountain biker.
After another 400m on the right side of the path the "Rettenbachalm" (name of the alpine pasture) (km42.8), where sufficient electricity is available, possibly also the battery can be recharged. However, the safe load is given at the Blaa Alm.
We pass the barrier (km43.0) after 200m and it goes slightly downhill along the Rettenbach on a gravel road that is also very busy depending on the weather. So pay attention to the traffic here.
Along the "Rettenbach" (name of the river) we ride downhill for about 6.2 km in order not to cross the "Rettenbach" after the hamlet of "Hinterstein", but to turn straight ahead into the "Hubhanslauweg" (name of the path) (km49.2) in the direction of the town of Bad Ischl.
We follow the path through the settlement along the "Rettenbach" (river name) downstream until after about 500m we turn right into "Steinfeldstraße" (name of the street) (km49.7), after about 800m we cross the "Rettenbach" (name of the river) again (km50.5).
It goes downhill on asphalt along the railway, we cross the B145 and a little later the Traun to turn left into the cycle path R2 (km51.3) following the Traun upstream.
We follow the R2 cycle path in the direction of Bad Goisern, along the Esplanade, the Sissi Park and after about 6km we reach Lauffen and leave (km57.3) the R2 cycle path to the slightly left down, not crossing the Traun at this point, but continuing upstream on the left side of the "Traun" (name of the river).
After about 200m we turn left, drive under the railway line (57.5km) and follow the "Traun" upstream on a picturesque path in the direction of the Bad Goisern village of "Weißenbach". After about 1.6km we drive through the village of Weißenbach, cross the Weißenbach (km59) and a few meters later on the right side in the guest garden of the "Weissenbachwirt" (name of the inn) to recapitulate our adventure.
It goes another 200m on asphalt again in the direction of the Traun River. If fatigue gets out of hand, this can be shortcut. Simply cross the "Traun" and immediately afterwards take the R2 in the direction of the village of Bad Goisern, or get on the train at the "Jodschwefelbad" (name of a train station).
The rest take the original path and turn right before the "Traunbrücke" (name of a bridge) (km59.3) and follow the asphalt path following the signs, first slightly uphill, always staying on the main path, past the spa to turn left after about 1.9km.
After a short descent, we turn left again along the Traun for 300m to the bridge, which we cross and then follow the "Salzkammergut Cycle Path R2" (name of the cycle path), through the spa gardens, to our starting point in 1km at the market town hall.
