"Blaa Alm Loop" (Alpine hut)
from Bad Goisern am Hallstättersee (S434)
There are numerous entry points for this tour. In the following route description, we have concentrated on the variant from the centre of the World Heritage town of Bad Goisern on Lake Hallstatt. The best way to get to the starting point is by public transport - the Austrian Federal Railways (ÖBB). Most local trains have an extra compartment for mountain bikes. For more information, please contact the conductor directly
Here we go: We start at the municipal office in Bad Goisern (centre) and turn right into the market square. We follow the Salzkammergut Cycle Path (R2) in the direction of Hallstatt. After about 1.3km we leave the cycle path to the left up into Wiesenstraße, pass under the Salzkammergut main road (B145). Be careful when crossing! Busy road with fast vehicles!
After about 300m we stay straight ahead at the fork in the road (km1.6) and ride uphill on asphalt in numerous hairpin bends in the direction of the Bad Goiserer district of "Herndl".
We reach "Herndl" (km3.7) after about 2.1km and turn right after the left bend at the 2nd crossroads. At first it gets slightly downhill and after about 400m we come to gravel on the "Herndlsbergweg" (road name) (km4.1). Note: Be careful to expect oncoming traffic here.
It goes downhill through the forest through a left-hand bend and after about 600m we keep to the left, only to feel asphalt under the tires again a short time later. At the end of the Hendlbergweg (name of the trail) (km4.9) we turn 90 degrees right and after a few metres at the crossroads (km5.0) turn left onto the "Pichlern" goods road, leaving it after 600 m to the right (587 m, km 5.6) onto the forest road.
We continue uphill in the direction of Ausseerland - the Styrian part of the Salzkammergut. We keep to the right, follow the signs S434 "Blaa-Alm Runde", cross the "Leislingbach" (name of a small stream) at 830 m and after about 5.3 km we come to the Scheibenstraße (road name) (910 hm, km 10.9), into which we turn left and after 900 m leave again to the right (km 11.8). Now the path goes along the nature reserve "Waldgraben-Scheibenmoos".
To see what view the old knights had, after about 1.2 km a small path leads to the right to the castle ruins "Pflindsberg", at the same time the highest point of this tour at an altitude of 930 m with an observation tower that offers a wonderful panoramic view over the Ausseerland.
We continue along the path (km 13.6) until we reach the repopulated area at the barrier coming out of the forest. The district has the name "Zenzenbichl" and we descend about 1km over serpentines to turn left into Lupitschstraße (km14.6) when we reach the bottom. About 200m later, at the fork in the road "Öllergasse" (km14.8), we keep to the right until the next crossroads (km15.2), where we stay on the right for about 300m and turn left in the Kesselgrube (km15.5) through the village of Altaussee.
After about 600m we turn left (km16.1) into the cycle path (R61) in the direction of "Blaa Alm" and follow it for another 3.3km on asphalt through the Loser ski area and straight ahead through the gate (km19.4) on gravel in the direction of "Blaa Alm", which we reach after about 1.6km. On the "Blaa Alm" (km21.0) there is the possibility to recharge the battery.
We cross the barrier after the alpine pasture to turn right at the next junction (km21.3) after about 300m and after another 100m turn left (km21.4).
Now comes the ride on the Soleweg for about 3.5 km through the "Rettenbachklamm", which is certainly one of the most beautiful nature routes through the Salzkammergut. The gorge is the shortest connection between Bad Aussee and Bad Ischl.
Attention: there is a short tunnel on the way, which of course is a small handicap when unlit, but also has an adventure character.
After a left turn, already outside the gorge, the Rettenbachalm (km24.9) opens up, after about 400 m on the right side of the path is the primeval Lippenbauernhütte (km25.4), which is lovingly run by a mountain biker.
After another 600 m on the right side of the path the "Rettenbachalm" (km26.0), where sufficient electricity is available, possibly also the battery can be recharged. However, the safe load is given at the "Blaa Alm".
We pass the barrier after 200 m and it goes slightly downhill along the "Rettenbach" (name of the castle) on a gravel road that is also very busy depending on the weather. Attention: Pay attention to the traffic here!
Along the "Rettenbach" (name of the stream) we ride downhill for about 6.3 km in order NOT to cross the Rettenbach after the hamlet of "Hinterstein", but to turn straight ahead into the Hubhanslauweg (km32.3) in the direction of the town of Bad Ischl.
We follow the path through the settlement along the "Rettenbach" downstream until we turn right into Steinfeldstraße (km32.9) after about 600m and cross the Rettenbach again after about 700m (km33.6).
We go downhill on asphalt along the railway, we cross the Salzkammergut main road (B145) and a little later the Traun to turn left into the cycle path (R2) (km34.4) following the "Traun" (name of the river) upstream.
We follow the cycle path (R2) in the direction of the World Heritage town of Bad Goisern, along the "Esplanade", the "Sissipark" (named after the Austrian Empress Elisabent - Siss for short) and after about 6km we reach the pilgrimage town of "Lauffen" and leave (km40.4) the cycle path (R2) slightly to the left by not crossing the "Traun" (name of the river) at this point but continuing upstream on the left side of the "Traun".
After about 200m we turn left, drive under the railway line (40.6km) and follow the "Traun" (river) upstream on a picturesque path in the direction of the Bad Goisern district of "Weißenbach". After about 1.6km we drive through the village of Weißenbach, cross the Weißenbach (km42.1) and a few meters later on the right side in the guest garden of the Weissenbachwirt to recapitulate our adventure.
It goes another 200m on asphalt again in the direction of Traun. If fatigue gets out of hand, this can be shortcut. Simply cross the Traun and immediately afterwards take the R2 in the direction of Bad Goisern, or get on the train at the iodine-sulphur bath.
The rest take the "original path" (name of the path) and turn right in front of the Traun bridge (name of the bridge) (km42.3) and follow the asphalt path following the signs, first slightly uphill, always staying on the main path, past the spa to turn left after about 1.9km.
After a short descent, we turn left again along the Traun for 300m to the bridge, which we cross and then follow the "Salzkammergut Cycle Path" (R2), through the spa gardens, to our starting point in 1km at the market town hall.
