Snowshoeing on the Dachstein

Krippenstein news: This has never happened before

The start of the summer season in a mix with snowshoeing and ski touring on the Dachstein Krippenstein. The late snow makes it possible: Snowshoe hikes to the 5fingers as well as the Dachstein-Hai (Dachstein shark) are also possible due to the snow on the mountain (about 150 cm). The trails are signposted and offer a unique May experience with direct glacier views.

Snowshoe adventure for climbers

Leaving tracks through the winter landscape with snowshoes - the silent means of transportation – is finding more and more fans. On the Krippenstein and the Dachstein mountains one will find a wonderful winter landscape. Still the comfort is not missing; numerous alpine cabins in the area around the Dachstein invite you to refreshments. Strap on some snowshoes – let the snow crunch underfoot, and recharge your batteries with a snowshoe tour. A snowshoe hiking campaign is being launched for all snowshoers in the Freeride Arena Krippenstein. Unlike ski tourers (ski mountaineers) who follow one after the other, snowshoe hikers look for untracked snow whilst ascending and descending – therefore they go so much more in the area.

For all keen snowshoe hikers, along with those who wish to become one, there is a special ticket on the Krippenstein. The huge massif of Dachstein offers two different worlds: the winter wonderland with its Swiss pine trees and massive boulders and the fabulous expanse of Hallstatt glacier, the largest in the Northern Limestone Alps. This includes ascent and descent with all three sections of the Krippenstein cable car, alpine lodge voucher (Lodge am Krippenstein, Gjaidalm or Krippenbrunn) and the hire of the snowshoe equipment. Information is available at the Obertraun tourist office (+43 (0) 06131/351) or under krippenstein.com.

Guided snowshoe hike on Dachstein plateau

The great thing about snowshoeing is that it requires no prior knowledge or special skills. Also, the snowshoes are now equipped with sophisticated technology: A movable binding, crampons and low weight ensure pleasant climbing and tracks in the snow. Amongst others, popular destinations on the Krippenstein in Obertraun are the Heilbronner chapel, the World Heritage panorama (Five Fingers) and within the area around the Gjaidalm a hike to Dachsteinblick is highly recommended! Incidentally: most local ski schools also offer snowshoes for hire. And who does not want to go alone can walk in groups. For the latest schedule please check our calendar of events or with the tourist office Obertraun under (+43 (0) 06131/351 So: On with the snowshoes, ready, go!
